The poem Felix Randal is a sonnet by Hopkins. It is written about the death of Felix Randal who was a blacksmith. It also describes the duty of the poet as a priest who offers spiritual comfort to the people within his authority. This poem also expresses the young health of the blacksmith. He was once very strong, big- boned, handsome and muscular.
The relationship between the speaker, a priest, and a young man named Felix Randal is examined in the poem. The priest thinks back on the life, the illness, and the passing of this parishioner, who at first was resentful of the illness that sapped his vitality but, with the speaker’s assistance, eventually accepted his death with grace. The youngster was definitely a special friend to the speaker because he “Tended to him” during his illness and offered “sweet relief and ransom” when things got tough.
However, he gradually moved towards decaying and the poet found another fascinated process of nature to replace the weak by new young force of power and strength. Though it may seem to be rude that the poet is being amazed by the rule of the nature but the fact beneath is that the universe has to move on with all young energy, leaving the weak and decayed behind. Actually, death is a close friend to everyone.
