“The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock” Summary

“The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is a dramatic monologue about a modern man in his forties. He can’t decide whether or not to propose marriage to the woman he loves. Even though the poem’s name makes it sound like a love poem, there is not a single line about making love. Instead, the narrator tries to show that he has no good reason to propose to his love just yet.

The poem is also a product of the vanity and triviality of modern life since the narrator says he wasted a lot of time doing nothing or things that weren’t important. People in the contemporary world waste their time by not doing anything.

The 2nd part of The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock Summary

Alfred Prufrock is probably middle-aged, has a bald head, and has trouble making decisions. He invites the reader to go with him through the modern city. Prufrock says useless and silly things that nobody wants to hear from him. He talks too much about the street scene and a group of women talking about the Renaissance artist Michelangelo (Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance who had an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art).

But the ladies don’t know anything about Michelangelo. He talks about the yellow smoke and fog outside the house where the gathering is happening, and he keeps saying that there will be time to do many things in the social world. In reality, these show how meaningless the modern world is.

Prufrock worries about how his social actions will make other people see him. He thinks about women’s arms and perfume, but he doesn’t know how to act around them. He walks through the streets and sees lonely men leaning out their windows. Every day goes by, but he can’t get up the courage to ask the woman he loves to marry him. He’s afraid, he says.

The third part of The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock Summary

He says that the eyes of the woman are like an X-ray machine that can see right through him and show all of his stupidity and fear. If they find out, they’ll make fun of him. He doesn’t go to propose because of this.

Prufrock thinks that if a woman rejects him because of it, he will be very hurt. He doesn’t think of himself as Prince Hamlet, but as a minor character in life. He follows the styles of young people because he is afraid of getting old. He has a dream of mermaids singing and swimming when he is at the beach.

When he wakes up, it will be easy to figure out that they are not singing for him. Instead, they are singing for heroes like Ulysses, who was known as the greatest warrior. He is well aware that he is not as brave as Ulysses. Last but not least, he can’t propose because he’s too frustrated and disappointed with reality to do so.
